 | The Scream Queen Mafia: Scarlet Salem and Camp Kill! |

Written by none other than Rachel Grubb
I’ve done several movies that also featured fellow Minneapolis Scream
Queen Scarlet Salem, but on the new feature length horror film Camp
Kill I finally got a chance to act with her. I recently got together
with her so that we could tell you about our experience on the set…
Rachel: So, let’s talk about CAMP KILL! Should we start off by telling everyone what the movie’s about?

Scarlet: Well
of course! CAMP KILL is an ode to the 80s slasher films! It has the
campy feel to it. Its about a killer on the loose at this camp site
that stalks innocent people and eventually kills them, kind of like a
Friday the 13th. Its great, they need to make more movies like that! I
really enjoyed making that film just because Ive always loved watching
them!
Rachel: What are some of your favorites?
Scarlet:
Some of my favorites include, DAY and DAWN OF THE DEAD (all original),
CHILDS PLAY, PET SEMETARY, THE THING, THE BLOB, PHANTOMS, FRIDAY THE
13TH, NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, THE EVIL DEAD, HELLRAISER, and CONGO
just to name a few!
Rachel:
Do you like any Asian horror? I am a big fan of the Juon series, and
the Korean Films “A Tale Of Two Sisters” and “Memento Mori.”
Scarlet: I
really never got into Asian horror. I really enjoyed Ringu after I seen
the American version of The Ring, but after that came about, it seemed
like everyone wanted to do those films. Then The Grudge came out, etc,
etc. I like some, but really haven’t watched that many yet.
Rachel: How about non-horror? What are some of your favorites?
Scarlet:
Well, I’m a huge fan of the Chevy Chase’s NATIONAL LAMPOONS VACATION’S,
Goodfellas, Scarface, Casino, anything with John Candy, Rocky Horror
Picture Show, anything with Tim Curry, Legend, Willow, The Never Ending
Story, anything with Bruce Campbell, and the list goes on! I also love
The Simpsons, South Park, The Munsters, Xena, Hercules and more! That
gives you an idea, I guess!
Rachel: How about our roles in CAMP KILL? We’re kind of friends, but we don’t exactly get along…
Scarlet: Our
roles are hilarious, Rachel! I play a stuck up, prissy girl who needs
her cell phone at all times and you play a down to earth, happy go
lucky girl that will put up with a lot. My character is so mean to you
and you’re just like, whatever! Haha! Its really funny because
surprisingly I’ve never played such a bi-atch before! You know what??
It was fun!! Haha!
Rachel: Yeah,
I remember the first day of shooting, you were like, “THIS character is
AWFUL!” But playing the bitch IS fun. It’s usually me, though. I’m
always the bitch! Before my character Sue had a name, I was shocked that she was called “nice girl” in the script. I never get to be the nice girl.
So
you play Jocelyn, and I’m Sue. They’re two very different girls who are
probably friends just because they’ve known each other for so long. I’m
this arty girl who’s into photography, and I basically drag you off to
this camping ground for vacation. It’s hell for you,of course, because
you can’t get any cell phone service where we are. We’re one story, but
there are several different groups of people staying at the camp. It’s
an ensemble cast. This is our first time acting together, but we’ve
been in lots of the same movies. How many have their been?
Scarlet: Oh wow! We’ve done a few together! Lets see, NFTS Productions ˜TERROR OVERLOAD" which we just recently finished…
Rachel: Somehow, I ended up in every single segment, except the one you were in!
Scarlet:
Merle Productions TRINITY which you still have to do your scenes, Ric
McClouds UNHOLY REUNION but I only have a small scene in that, and
Haunted Autumn Productions TALES OF THE DEAD…
Rachel: That
was five different stories…and yet again, I was in nearly all of them,
and I still didn’t have any scenes with you! I don’t think we had ever
even been on set the same day. Have there been any others?
Scarlet: I
think thats all of them. Its so hard to keep track, hehe! Its funny how
many films we’ve done but CAMP KILL was the first one where we were
able to work together on, funny how that happens.
Rachel: What was your favorite part of filming CAMP KILL?
Scarlet: All
of them!! My favorite parts in CAMP KILL were all my dream sequences.
They were just so damn ridiculous and funny! Other than those scenes, I
was able to work with great people and have a blast the whole time! You
were great to work with sweetie, thank you!!!
Rachel: Thanks!
I had a lot of fun working with you, too. I liked doing the dream
sequences, too, because we didn’t have to worry about being realistic.
Have you seen any of the rough cut of CAMP KILL yet?
Scarlet: Unfortunately not. I just seen the trailer, which is pretty sweet! I’m super stoked about it, though!
Rachel: What else would you like to do? Any specific career goals?
Scarlet: This
is my career goal, baby!! Oh yes, acting all the way! I am aiming to
make a living off of what I love to do and thats to entertain all of
you! Ive already started to be in bigger budget films, and thats where
I need to be. Independent/non paying films are kick butt, dont get me
wrong, but the films in Minnesota anyways, wont pay the bills. So,
expect me in the next year to be doing more conventions and more films
on the way!
Rachel: I’ve
said before that my ideal role would be to play Harley Quinn opposite
Heath Ledger as the Joker. What would you say yours would be?
Scarlet: One
of my ideal roles would be Lily in the film, LEGEND. I love that film
and the characters in it! My favorite films, besides horror, are the
myth and legends so Lily would be my #1 pick!!
